Why we started
Welcome to the Charlottesville Black Business Directory! This community-built directory is intended to empower and connect local Black-owned businesses to the greater Charlottesville area.
We understand that it is imperative to support local Black-owned businesses to build equity in our community. Destinee Wright, a University of Virginia alumni, entrepreneur, and Equity Center fellow, started this directory in 2018. What began as a Facebook post for Small Business Saturday in which she asked Charlottesville locals to tag Black-owned businesses in the area has turned into the Charlottesville Black Business Directory project.
City officials have tapped this directory, and it has garnered local attention as an official source for Black businesses! My goal for this post is to support local Black business owners–regardless of where they are in their entrepreneurial journey. Our goal is to build a comprehensive list to document all local Black-owned businesses based in Charlottesville, Virginia.
We are currently working with the University of Virginia’s Equity Center to develop this site further and ensure that it is a valuable resource for the community. There are over 200 Charlottesville-based Black-owned businesses listed in our directory. Click here to browse the list and support.

- Positively influencing the local economy.
- Increasing representation and visibility of Black brands.
- Helping to close the racial wealth gap.
- Empowering Black businesses and celebrating Black culture.
When browsing our directory, please comment under and review businesses you love and share the site with a friend. We are actively updating this directory but rely on our community to keep this list current. If you see anything that needs to change or know of businesses that need to be added, contact us!
